23 yrs. in coma, Belgian Rom Houben, 46, was and is awake. After a car crash accident 23 years ago, at the age of 20 he was diagnosed in a vegetative state but thanks to the doctor who discovered in 2006 that Rom Houben was conscious of his surrounding. He could not move or talk but was able to feel, see, hear and listen but nobody knew it because he did not know how to convey his thinking. It was only in 2006, and with the help of Dr. Steven Laureys of Belgium's Coma Science Group, they found out that he was misdiagnosed. He was paralyzed indeed but his brain was fully alert all the time and now he is able to communicate.

This is great news to everybody. If you know somebody who has the same situation like Rom Houben. Just listen to his heart, feel him, nourish him, touch him, talk to him anthing as if he can understand you, as if nothing happens. Do not lose hope as long as the person is breathing, as long as there are doctors, nurses, scientists who are studying and researching to save others, as long as there are people who care for others, as long as you will take care of that person, miracles can happen. I am so happy of this wonderful news because my husband was in comatose state for 2 weeks because of blood clot on his brain, the doctors immediately performed the operation without me knowing it because they have to save his life right there and then, without them i donot know what would happen next. They were able to save his life and let him came back to us. Now, he is the same man as i've known him, is able to work again . We are always grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff of the ZNA hospital. As i have told you again and again, medical care in Belgium is amazing.
